MAKE THE LONG WEEKEND EXTRA SPECIAL BY CREATING EASTER GIFTS, TREATS
AND DECORATIONS IN A PALETTE OF FRESH SPRING COLOURS

Easter crafts: Set a pretty table

Transform a garden table into the perfect spot for a celebration Easter tea party with a simple table runner made from ribbed craft paper. To create a welcoming display, wrap your cakes in spotty cellophane and add silver tealight holders and vases filled with spring flowers. Finish by scattering the table with sweets.

Easter crafts and gifts: Make rabbit chains

Rabbits are a classic symbol of Easter and make an endearing decoration for the tabic. To create a template for the rabbit, use the photograph, right, as a guide for the rabbit shape - it needs to be 20cm high and 15cm wide. Trace on to card and cut out the template. Cut a sheet of thin white card into 4, 75cm by 20cm sections, then fold each one into 5,15cm by 20cm sections to make a concertina shape. Place your rabbit template on the folded card and draw around it. Cut out the Easter rabbit motif but make sure you don't cut the tail, paws, nose and ears or the rabbits will not stay as a chain. Pull out the rabbit chain and place flat on
a table. From coloured paper, cut ear, eye, nose, leg and tail shapes, again using the photograph as a
guide. Glue in place on the individual rabbits.

Display Easter rabbits on your Easter table, joining the four separate rabbit chains using paper straws and sticky tape if you like.

Easter crafts and gifts: Get ready for the egg hunt

A display of paper garlands and raffia in gorgeous colours will draw the eye of any keen young Easter egg hunter on the lookout for something sweet. To make the hanging treats, fill a baking cup with natural raffia and add chocolate eggs. Wrap with cellophane, secure with some spotty tape and hide around the garden.

Easter crafts and gifts ideas: Display speckled eggs

Group feather and egg decorations in vases - or in traditional milk bottles as we have done here - for a
seasonal alternative to traditional flowers. To make each decoration, press a roady-paintod polyresin or
polystyrene egg on to a wooden skewer. Arrange a few feathers around the base of the egg and secure
in place with a length of thin ribbon tied in a double knot. To finish, straighten out the ribbon and neatly
cut each side on a slant to prevent it from fraying.

Easter crafts and gifts ideas: Create a crate tray

Bring a touch of countryside charm into your home by filling small wooden crates with a selection of painted eggs, feathers, flowers and moss. Start by placing a bed of moss in each crate, then arrange individual eggs or boxes of eggs on top. Finish by adding a few feathers and real or artificial flowers to the display.

Easter crafts and gifts ideas: Personalise a gift box

A decorated egg-shaped gift box filled with mini chocolate eggs is a thoughtful Easter gift. To make, cut a piece of fabric - lightweight cotton is ideal - slightly larger that one half of a cardboard egg mould. Use a glue stick to glue in place, stretching the fabric from the middle of the egg down the sides.

The bottom of the fabric will now have a frilled edge as a result of the stretching process so just trim neatly leaving about half a centimetre of frill. Repeat on the other half of the mould and finish each side with a strip of contrasting fabric or ribbon.

Craft Easter hen table runners

Add a splash of colour with a decoration featuring cheery patchwork hens and eggs. Use the photograph, loft, as a guide to make templates for the hen and egg shapes. Draw the shapes freehand - our hen is around 20cm high by 20cm wide. Trace the shapes on to thin cardboard (cereal boxes are ideal), cutting as
many as you need for your runner design - we used two hen, four large egg and four small egg shapes for each runner. Working with different fabrics, cut irregular pieces and overlap to cover one side of each cardboard shape. Once you are happy with the placement, glue the fabric using a glue stick and trim. Cut two strips of ribbon slightly longer than the length of your table, then glue the hens and eggs in place. To finish, turn the ribbon over and glue the remaining hens and eggs to match on the other side.

Give guests a sweet treat

Treat everyone to a going-home gift in the form of these chocolate-filled containers. Fill plain cups with treats and pop the lids back on, then decorate with flower and bird stickers before securing with bright green raffia.
